ABSTRACT

Abstract Background: Pemphigus constitutes a group of autoimmune bullous diseases. A reduction in the incidence of endemic pemphigus foliaceus and an increase in pemphigus vulgaris has been described, but there are no studies in Minas Gerais that address the subject. Objective: To describe the epidemiological and clinical profile of patients with pemphigus treated at the Dermatology Service of a public University Hospital in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Methods: An observational, descriptive, and cross-sectional study was carried out of cases of endemic pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris, for a period of six months. A questionnaire was filled out with epidemiological and clinical data on the disease. Results: A total of 122 patients were included in the study, 64 with endemic pemphigus foliaceus and 58 with pemphigus vulgaris. When comparing patients with endemic pemphigus foliaceus and those with pemphigus vulgaris, a statistical difference was observed between the median age of initial disease manifestation (p = 0.001), patient occupation (p = 0.010), area of residence (p = 0.000), forests (p = 0.000) and rivers/streams close to the dwelling (p = 0.001) and the number of systemic medications required to control the disease (p = 0.002). When comparing patients with endemic pemphigus foliaceus to those evaluated in a study carried out at the same service in 2008, there was a statistical difference in the area of residence (p = 0.030). Study limitations: The assessed population comes from a tertiary care service that is not a reference for the entire state. Conclusions: Patients with endemic pemphigus foliaceus and pemphigus vulgaris maintain statistically significant differences regarding their main variables in the literature, such as age and area of residence. Historically, there has been a reduction in cases of endemic pemphigus foliaceus and an increase in cases of pemphigus vulgaris in this population.

Introducción: se vive una crisis de confianza en la ciencia y una época de menosprecio a los conocimientos y evidencias. Las opiniones de los líderes políticos y otras figuras públicas ajenas a los problemas de salud tienen una mayor consideración y peso que los juicios emitidos por los expertos. Una evidencia que demuestra la debilidad de México en el campo de la salud son dos hechos en los cuales las autoridades del país son los culpables que son: la desaparición del Seguro Popular y la pobre respuesta a la pandemia de COVID-19. Conclusiones: la pandemia no termina por decreto, se logrará con cuidados y prevención realizada por el gobierno, instituciones y personal de salud y la sociedad (AU)


Introduction: we are living through a crisis of confidence in science and an era of disregard for knowledge and evidence. The opinions of political leaders and other public figures who are not involved in health problems are given greater consideration and weight than the judgments made by experts. Evidence that demonstrates Mexico's weakness in the field of health are two facts in which the country's authorities are to blame: the disappearance of Seguro Popular and the poor response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: the pandemic does not end by decree, it will be achieved with care and prevention carried out by the government, health institutions and personnel and society (AU)

ABSTRACT

Purpose: Leptospirosis is a waterborne zoonotic disease that primarily causes systemic illness, followed by uveitis. After heavy flooding in Madurai district, an epidemic outbreak of systemic and ocular leptospirosis occurred in 1994. Our data shows a transition to endemicity after each epidemic. Aim: The aim of this study is to report the clinical signs, epidemic outbreaks, and persistent endemicity of leptospiral uveitis, as well as the diagnostic dilemmas associated with it. Methods: A retrospective analysis of clinical signs was conducted using medical records of leptospiral uveitis patients over a period of 27 years (1994–2020) in a tertiary care eye hospital. The clinical workup of uveitis included a detailed clinical history, systemic, and ophthalmic examination. Microagglutination tests (MATs) was done at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta and later in our regional laboratory. Serum samples were collected from human systemic leptospirosis cases and a small group of animals in and around Madurai. Results: The first epidemic outbreak resulted in 200 seropositive patients. Subsequent epidemic outbreaks occurred in 1997, 1998, 2001, 2005, and 2012, with Madurai experiencing multiple outbreaks. However, the disease remained endemic, with 25–50 patients being observed per year in between the peaks. Ocular examination revealed acute non?granulomatous uveitis (94.9%), pan uveitis (59.8%), vitreous inflammatory reaction (55.4%), retinal vasculitis (29.5%), disc hyperemia (20.9%), and hypopyon. (16.2%). New serovars emerged every year, resulting in decreased sensitivity of the MAT. Over time, the MAT started to miss diagnoses. Conclusion: The persistent endemicity of leptospiral uveitis emphasizes the need for accessible diagnostic tests. The low performance of the MAT can be attributable to the use of an older panel. The incorporation of new isolates in the MAT by a national laboratory will improve the accuracy of diagnosis

ABSTRACT

Objetivo: Analizar el comportamiento de enfermedades vectoriales en una población manabita. Materiales y métodos: Se desarrolló bajo un tipo de investigación descriptiva de corte transversal y enfoque cuantitativo, con la utilización de un cuestionario como instrumento de recolección de datos. La muestra fueron 200 adultos del barrio San José de la parroquia Tarqui ­ Manta, de la provincia de Manabí ­ Ecuador. Resultados y conclusión: A través de esta investigación se pudo determinar que, de las 200 personas encuestadas, el 24% ha presentado alguna enfermedad vectorial, prevaleciendo el dengue con un 66.66%. Del 26% de familiares y conocidos de los encuestados que ha padecido enfermedades vectoriales, el 77.35% fue dengue. Generalmente, se presentan con síntomas que duran entre 1 a 3 días y sin mayores secuelas. La mayoría cuenta con servicios sanitarios óptimos y el 100% coincide que existen aguas estancadas en espacios públicos. Objective: To analyze the behavior of vectorial diseases in a Manabi population. Materials and methods: It was developed under a type of descriptive cross-sectional research and quantitative approach with the use of a questionnaire as a data collection instrument. The sample consisted of 200 adults from the San José neighborhood of the Tarqui - Manta parish in the province of Manabí - Ecuador. Results and conclusion: Through this investigation it was possible to determine that of the 200 people surveyed, 24% have presented some vector disease, with dengue prevailing with 66.66%. Of the 26% of relatives and acquaintances of the respondents who have suffered vector-borne diseases, 77.35% were dengue. They usually present with symptoms that last between 1 to 3 days and without major sequelae. Most have optimal sanitary services and 100% agree that there is stagnant water in public spaces.

ABSTRACT

The prevention and control of endemic diseases belongs to public health undertakings, and public health issues are of great importance to the national economy and people's livelihood. This paper discusses how to promote the further development of the prevention and control of endemic diseases based on the actual situation of the prevention and control of endemic diseases. It is suggested that measures should be taken to develop a long-term mechanism and improve the system construction, so as to realize the sustainable development of endemic disease prevention in the new era and better meet the health needs of the people.

ABSTRACT

Over the past decade, remarkable progress has been made in prevention and control of endemic diseases in China through implementation of the 12th and the 13th Five-Year National Plans for Prevention and Control of Endemic Diseases and the Three-Year Action Plan for Special Prevention and Control of Endemic Diseases. Based on the latest monitoring data of endemic diseases and the evaluation results of the control and elimination of endemic diseases of the 13th Five-Year Plan, this paper analyzed current main problems in prevention and control of endemic diseases in China, focusing on implementation of prevention and control measures for iodine deficiency disorders, endemic fluorosis, and endemic arsenicosis, as well as the treatment and management of patients. Accordingly, corresponding countermeasures and suggestions are put forward from three aspects, including prevention and control mechanism, implementation of prevention and control measures, and scientific research, so as to provide scientific basis for the country and various regions to consolidate the achievements of prevention and control of endemic diseases and accurately implement the prevention and control measures of endemic diseases.

ABSTRACT

This report presented the endemic status of schistosomiasis and analyzed the data collected from the national schistosomiasis prevention and control system and national schistosomiasis surveillance program in the People’s Republic of China in 2022. Among the 12 provinces (municipality and autonomous region) endemic for schistosomiasis, Shanghai Municipality, Zhejiang Province, Fujian Province, Guangdong Province and Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region continued to maintain the achievements of schistosomiasis elimination, and Sichuan and Jiangsu provinces maintained the criteria of transmission interruption, while Yunnan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangxi and Hunan provinces maintained the criteria of transmission control by the end of 2022. A total of 452 counties (cites, districts) were found to be endemic for schistosomiasis in China in 2022, with 27 434 endemic villages covering 73 424 400 people at risk of infections. Among the 452 endemic counties (cities, districts), 75.89% (343/452), 23.45% (106/452) and 0.66% (3/452) achieved the criteria of elimination, transmission interruption and transmission control of schistosomiasis, respectively. In 2022, 4 317 356 individuals received serological tests for schistosomiasis, and 62 228 were sero-positive. A total of 208 646 individuals received stool examinations for schistosomiasis, with one positive and another two cases positive for urine microscopy, and these three 3 cases were imported schistosomiasis patients from Africa. There were 28 565 cases with advanced schistosomiasis documented in China by the end of 2022. Oncomelania hupensis snail survey was performed in 18 891 endemic villages in China in 2022 and O. hupensis snails were found in 6 917 villages (36.62% of all surveyed villages), with 8 villages identified with emerging snail habitats. Snail survey was performed at an area of 655 703.01 hm2 and 183 888.60 hm2 snail habitats were found, including 110.58 hm2 emerging snail habitats and 844.35 hm2 re-emerging snail habitats. There were 477 200 bovines raised in the schistosomiasis endemic areas of China in 2022, and 113 946 bovines received serological examinations for schistosomiasis, with 204 sero-positives detected. Among the 131 715 bovines received stool examinations, no positives were identified. In 2022, there were 19 726 schistosomiasis patients receiving praziquantel chemotherapy, and expanded chemotherapy was performed in 714 465 person-time for humans and 234 737 herd-time for bovines in China. In 2022, snail control with chemical treatment was performed at an area of 119 134.07 hm2, and the actual area of chemical treatment was 65 825.27 hm2, while environmental improvements were performed at an area of 1 163.96 hm2. Data from the national schistosomiasis surveillance program of China showed that the mean prevalence of Schistosoma japonicum infections was both zero in humans and bovines in 2022, and no S. japonicum infection was detected in O. hupensis snails. These data demonstrated that the endemic status of schistosomiasis continued to decline in China in 2022, with 3 confirmed schistosomiasis patients that had a foreign nationality and all imported from Africa, and the areas of snail habitats remained high. Further improvements in the construction of the schistosomaisis surveillance and forecast system, and reinforcement of O. hupensis survey and control are required to prevent the re-emerging schistosomiasis.

Objective To analyze the epidemiological characteristics of echinococcosis cases reported in the National Notifiable Disease Report System in Henan Province from 2010 to 2011, so as to provide insights into for echinococcosis control and surveillance. Methods The data pertaining to reported echinococcosis cases in Henan Province from 2010 to 2021 were retrieved from the National Notifiable Disease Report System, and a descriptive epidemiological analysis was performed using the software SPSS 22.0. Results A total of 150 echinococcosis cases were reported in Henan Province from 2010 to 2021, including 88 confirmed cases (58.67%) and 62 clinically diagnosed cases (41.33%), 77 cases reported by Henan Province (51.33%) and 73 cases reported by other provinces (48.67%). Echinococcosis cases were reported in each month, with 8 to 21 cases reported in each month, and the number of reported echinococcosis cases appeared no remarkable temporal changes. The echinococcosis cases were reported across 18 cities of Henan Province, with the highest number of cases reported in Zhoukou (17.33%) and Nanyang cities (17.33%) and the lowest number reported in Sanmenxia City (0.67%). The reported echinococcosis cases had a male to female ratio of 1.17:1, and the cases were found at each age group, with the the highest number of cases seen at ages of 20 to 59 years (73.33%). Farmer was the predominant occupation (63.33%), followed by housekeepers and the unemployed (12.67%). Of all reported echinococcosis cases, there were 25 local cases (16.67%) and 125 imported cases (83.33%), 144 cases reported by medical institutions (96.00%) and 6 cases reported by centers for disease control and prevention (4.00%). Conclusions Although imported echinococcosis cases were the predominant source of echinococcosis cases reported in the National Notifiable Disease Report System in Henan Province from 2010 to 2021, there were still sporadic local cases, and the emergence of local sources of infection cannot be excluded. Further expanded field surveys and surveillance of echinococcosis are required.

Thus, the M. macrophylla extract showed IC50 of 3.43 mg/ml of the antioxidant (DPPH∙ scavenging test) and Sun Protection Factor of 20.25 (SPF/UV-B, at 250 µg/ml) and UV-A of 78.09% (photobleaching trans-resveratrol test). The antinociceptive activity was superior to all standards tested using the in vivo acetic acid-induced writhing test (99.14% at the dose of 200 mg/kg) and the high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with diode array detector and mass spectroscopy multi-stage (HPLC-DAD-MS/MS) enabled the structural characterization of the quercetin-3-O-hexoside, quercetin-3-O-pentoside and quercetin-3-O-desoxihexoside. The pharmaceutical formulation containing the Marcetia macrophylla crude active extract was prepared and the physicochemical tests (organoleptic characteristics, pH analysis and centrifugation), the in vitro UVB (sun protection factor, SPF) and UVA (β-carotene) using the spectroscopic method were investigated. The formulation showed satisfactory results concerning the physicochemical parameters evaluated and active against the UV test. Thus, M. macrophylla showed biological activities with potential use in pharmaceutical preparations.

Abstract Dengue fever (DF) is increasingly recognized as one of the worlds major mosquito borne diseases and causes significant morbidity and mortality in tropical and subtropical countries. Dengue fever is endemic in most part of Pakistan and continues to be a public health concern. Knowledge, attitude and practices can play an important role in management of the disease. Current study was aimed to determine the level of knowledge, attitude and practices regarding dengue fever among health practitioners, to study the level of knowledge and attitude with preventive practices for dengue fever. A cross sectional study was carried out in medical practitioners of the four districts of Malakand region during October to November 2019. A pre-structured questionnaire was used to collect data from medical practitioners. Data was analyzed using Graph Pad version 5. Significant value was considered when less than 0.05 (at 95% confidence of interval). The results revealed that most of participants have seen dengue vector (62%), the media being the most quoted source of information. Nearly 81.2% participants were aware from transmission of dengue fever is by mosquito bite. Practices based upon preventive measures were found to be predominantly focused towards prevention of mosquito bites rather than elimination of breeding places. Although the knowledge regarding DF and mosquito control measure was quite high among the medical practitioners but this knowledge was not put into practice. Further studies are required to aware the people about dengue and its vector in order to get prevention and control.


Resumo A dengue (DF) é cada vez mais reconhecida como uma das principais doenças transmitidas por mosquitos do mundo e causa significativa morbidade e mortalidade em países tropicais e subtropicais. A dengue é endêmica na maior parte do Paquistão e continua a ser um problema de saúde pública. Conhecimento, atitude e práticas podem desempenhar papel importante no manejo da doença. O presente estudo teve como objetivo determinar o nível de conhecimento, atitude e práticas em relação à dengue entre os profissionais de saúde, para estudar o nível de conhecimento e atitude com as práticas preventivas da dengue. Um estudo transversal foi realizado com médicos dos quatro distritos da região de Malakand de outubro a novembro de 2019. Um questionário pré-estruturado foi usado para coletar dados de médicos. Os dados foram analisados no Graph Pad versão 5. Valor significativo foi considerado quando menor que 0,05 (com intervalo de confiança de 95%). Os resultados revelaram que a maioria dos participantes já viu o vetor da dengue (62%), sendo a mídia a fonte de informação mais citada. Quase 81,2% dos participantes sabiam que a transmissão da dengue é por picada de mosquito. Constatou-se que as práticas baseadas em medidas preventivas se concentravam predominantemente na prevenção de picadas de mosquitos, e não na eliminação de criadouros. Embora o conhecimento sobre DF e medidas de controle de mosquitos fosse bastante elevado entre os médicos, esse conhecimento não foi colocado em prática. Mais estudos são necessários para conscientizar a população sobre a dengue e seu vetor, a fim de se obter prevenção e controle.

A análise por cromatografia líquida de alta eficiência acoplada a detector de fotodiodos e espectroscopia de massas multi-estágio (CLAE-DAD-EM/EM) possibilitou a caracterização dos flavonoides quercetina-3-O-hexosídeo, quercetina-3-O-pentosídeo e quercetina-3-O-desoxihexosídeo. A formulação farmacêutica contendo o extrato ativo bruto de Marcetia macrophylla foi preparada e os testes físico-químicos (características organolépticas, análise de pH e centrifugação), o UVB in vitro (fator de proteção solar, FPS) e UVA (β-caroteno) foram investigados. A formulação apresentou resultados satisfatórios frente aos parâmetros físico-químicos avaliados e ativos contra UV. Assim, M. macrophylla apresentou atividades biológicas com potencial uso em preparações fitofarmacêuticas.

Resumo Objetivo Traçar o perfil sociodemográfico dos agentes de combate a endemias (ACEs) dos municípios que compõem a microrregional de saúde de Itaúna, Minas Gerais; e apreender a percepção dos profissionais da vigilância entomológica sobre a doença de Chagas e serviços de saúde. Metodologia Aplicou-se um questionário semiestruturado aos ACEs e foi realizado um grupo focal com os coordenadores de endemias e digitadores. Resultados Dentre os ACEs, a maioria era do sexo feminino, entre 21 e 40 anos, com ensino médio, possuindo contrato de trabalho temporário há menos de 5 anos. Foi possível apreender: as más condições de trabalho dos ACEs, destacando-se a alta rotatividade e defasagem salarial; ausência de ações de promoção à saúde relacionadas à doença de Chagas; desarticulação entre a Atenção Primária à Saúde (APS) e Vigilância à Saúde (VS); e críticas às ações de controle da doença pós-processo de descentralização da saúde. Conclusões Há urgência na concretização da legislação inerente à natureza trabalhista e às condições de trabalho dos ACEs, bem como ao planejamento conjunto das ações de APS e VS, garantindo a atenção integral por meio de ações de promoção à saúde voltadas à população, focando especialmente a doença de Chagas, consolidando o SUS.


Abstract Objective To trace the sociodemographic profile of endemic disease combat agents (ACEs) in the municipalities that make up the health microregion of Itaúna, Minas Gerais; and apprehend the perception of entomological surveillance professionals about Chagas disease and health services. Methodology A semi-structured questionnaire was applied to the ACEs and a focus group was held with coordinators of endemic diseases and typists. Results Among the ACEs, the majority were female, between 21 and 40 years old, with high school education, with a temporary work contract for less than 5 years. It was possible to apprehend: the poor working conditions of the ACEs, highlighting the high turnover and wage gap; absence of health promotion actions related to Chagas disease; disarticulation between Primary Health Care (PHC) and Health Surveillance (HS); and criticism of disease control actions after the health decentralization process. Conclusions There is an urgent need to implement the legislation inherent to the labor nature and working conditions of the ACEs, as well as the joint planning of PHC and SV actions, guaranteeing comprehensive care through health promotion actions aimed at the population, focusing especially on Chagas disease, consolidating the SUS.

ABSTRACT Detecting latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is important, especially in high-risk populations including healthcare workers (HCWs). QuantiFERON-TB Gold Plus (QFT-Plus) is a new version of the interferon-gamma release assays (IGRAs) to replace the QuantiFERON-TB Gold In-tube (QFT-GIT). However, data on the use of QFT-Plus for LTBI detection in high TB-burden countries are limited. This study was conducted in a TB-endemic setting in Thailand. HCWs were enrolled in the study and underwent both tests during the annual health screening. The testing results were compared and the concordance was determined. Of 102 HCWs, 11 (10.78%) were positive according to both tests, and 15 (14.71%) were positive according to QFT-Plus. The overall agreement between assays was 96.08%, with Cohen's kappa coefficient (k) at 0.82. All four discordant results occurred with QFT-GIT negative and QFT-Plus positive. The comparison between QFT-GIT and QFT-Plus based on each antigen tube (TB1 or TB2) exhibited similar concordance with 99.02% and 95.10% agreement, respectively. The intra-comparison between TB1 and TB2 of QFT-Plus also showed good concordance at 96.08%. Among this group of HCWs, the LTBI prevalence of any positive results in both tests was low. Overall, the study showed good agreement between QFT-Plus and QFT-GIT (k = 0.82) with a minimal difference, suggesting similar assay performance to that mainly carried out in TB-low incidence countries. The results support the use of QFT-Plus for detecting LTBI in a format similar to QFT-GIT.

ABSTRACT Background: Scorpions are a leading cause of envenomation in Brazil. The species Tityus serrulatus is associated with the most severe cases, especially in children. Despite not being endemic to the state of Santa Catarina, such occurrences have increased more than 500% in the state recently. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the occurrence of envenomation by T. serrulatus, attended by the Center for Toxicological Information and Assistance of Santa Catarina. Methods: This was a retrospective and descriptive study of the occurrence of T. serrulatus, identified by the agency, from 2014 to 2021 in Santa Catarina, using data obtained by the BI-DATATOX system. Results: A total of 112 occurrences were classified as envenomation. Of these cases, 48.2% were recorded in the Itajaí Valley region and 33% in Greater Florianópolis. Men were involved in 59.8% of these, and the most common age group was 20-39 years (39.3%). Most envenomation occurred in urban areas (89.3%) under non-occupational circumstances (83%). Stings were more frequent on the hands (50.9%). Care was sought within 1 h after the event in 75.9% of the cases, and 94.6% were classified as mild. Conclusions: Occurrence of envenomation involving T. serrulatus in Santa Catarina increased significantly during the study period. Most cases occurred in urbanized areas, which suggests that they might have been transported from other states, and it must be considered that, in the urban environment, scorpions find a large supply of food and shelter and a reduced number of specific predators, allied to parthenogenesis.

@#Genitourinary tuberculosis (GUTB) represents a critical aspect of extra‑pulmonary tuberculosis (TB). While it is the second most common form of this disease, its diverse clinical presentations pose a substantial challenge. This report, titled “Varied Clinical Presentations of Genitourinary Tuberculosis: A Case Series from a Tertiary Philippine Hospital,” aims to shed light on the intricacies of GUTB diagnosis, treatment, and its broader implications. In this case series, we present five unique clinical scenarios. Cases 1, 2, and 3, having completed TB treatment, developed spontaneous genitourinary fistulae. Case 4 was initially managed as interstitial cystitis, while Case 5 underwent diverticulectomy for a urethral diverticulum. The diagnosis of GUTB as the underlying cause in these cases, despite conventional treatment, highlights the diagnostic challenges posed by this disease. All five patients, experienced irritative voiding symptoms and recurrent urinary tract infections with limited improvement following antibiotic therapy. Imaging studies consistently revealed upper urinary tract involvement. Importantly, only one case exhibited histologic evidence of granuloma suggestive of GUTB, and microbiologic confirmation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection was obtained in only two cases. This underscores the need for a multidimensional diagnostic approach. The findings in this case series emphasize that GUTB diagnosis, often reliant on clinical findings supported by imaging studies and suggestive cystoscopy findings, remains critical for prognosis, even in the absence of microbiologic confirmation. Beyond the individual cases, this series offers insights into the complexity of GUTB, raising questions about the overall management and implications for TB control.

ABSTRACT

ObjectiveTo analyze the monitoring data of schistosomiasis from 2004 to 2021 in Suzhou New District, Jiangsu Province, and to provide evidence for improving schistosomiasis elimination strategies. MethodsFollowing the Opinions on Prevention and Control of Schistosomiasis, Parasitic Diseases and Endemic Diseases in Suzhou and the Technical Plan for Prevention and Control of Schistosomiasis, Parasitic Diseases and Endemic Diseases in Suzhou, the monitoring of schistosomiasis in the population and snail habitats from 2004 to 2021 was conducted. The Mann-Kendall method and Joinpoint regression method were employed to analyze the trend of epidemic indicators (such as seropositive rate, prevalence of snail frames, etc.). Time series analysis (exponential smoothing model) was conducted to predict snail occurrence. ResultsFrom 2004 to 2021, a total of 73 680 people were serologically tested for schistosomiasis, with a positive rate of 0.084%. The seropositivity rate showed statistically significant differences between different years (χ2=70.73, P<0.05), but there was no significant trend over time. In addition, 3 053 fecal tests were conducted and no positive result was found. The snail habitats covered an area of 70.11 hm2 and showed a decreasing trend (Z=-1.97, P<0.05). A total of 30 093 frames were surveyed, of which 19.038% contained snails. The difference in the prevalence of snail frames between different years was statistically significant (χ2=7 203.09, P<0.05), with a decreasing trend in the prevalence of snail frames (Z=-2.05, P<0.05). A total of 26 296 live snails were seized and density of live snails was 0.874 snails per frame, showing a decreasing trend in the density of live snails (Z=-2.35, P<0.05). A total of 12 391 snails were dissected and no infected snail was found. The areas treated with molluscicides remained stable at 264.60 hm2. An area of 27.77 hm2 achieved the goal of snail eradication through environmental modification, with a decreasing trend (Z=-2.44, P<0.05). It is estimated that the prevalence of snail frames and snail density will remain relatively stable from 2022 to 2026, but the snail habitat area will fluctuate significantly, showing an increasing trend. ConclusionNo indigenous cases of schistosomiasis and no infected snails are reported, indicating the successful consolidation of schistosomiasis prevention and control measures. However, the snail habitat area fluctuates greatly with an increasing trend, suggesting the need for long-term Oncomelania snail monitoring in local areas.

Resumen Introducción: Los ríos tropicales se ven cada vez más afectados por la fragmentación y la regulación; y, en Colombia, se sabe que las represas ponen en peligro a los peces endémicos debido, entre otros, a la migración limitada y la disponibilidad reducida de redes alimenticias basadas en el detrito. Sin embargo, el conocimiento de la ictiofauna nativa afectada por represas en ríos altoandinos es aún incipiente. Objetivo: Evaluar los efectos de la represa del Neusa sobre la ictiofauna. Métodos: Comparamos dos secciones del río, una aguas arriba y otra aguas abajo de la represa con el Sistema Richter IHA, muestreamos tres transectos de 100 m de largo en cada sección, cada dos meses, entre 2017 y 2019. Los peces fueron devueltos al río después de efectuadas las mediciones corporales. Resultados: Recolectamos 729 individuos de cinco familias; los Trichomycterus bogotense eran más pequeños aguas abajo de la represa; Oncorhynchus mykiss fue más pequeño y menos abundante; y no hubo diferencias para Grundulus bogotensis y Eremophilus mutisii. Independientemente de los factores climáticos, O. mykiss y G. bogotensis fueron más abundantes aguas arriba, y E. mutisii y T. bogotense aguas abajo de la represa. Conclusión: Las cinco especies de peces diferían en cómo las poblaciones se diferencian aguas arriba y aguas abajo de la represa, lo que sugiere que algunas se benefician de la represa, mientras que otras se vuelven más pequeñas y menos abundantes.


Abstract Introduction: Tropical rivers are increasingly being affected by fragmentation and regulation; and, in Colombia, dams are known to endanger endemic fishes through, among others, limited migration and reduced availability of sediment-based feeding networks. However, knowledge of native ichthyofauna affected by dams in high Andean rivers is still incipient. Objective: To assess the effects of the Neusa dam on the ichthyofauna. Methods: We compared two rivers' sections, one above and one below the dam with the Richter IHA System, we sampled three 100 m long transects in each section, every two months, between 2017 and 2019. The fishes were returned to the river after body measurements. Results: We collected 729 individuals from five families; Trichomycterus bogotense were smaller under the dam; Oncorhynchus mykiss was smaller and less abundant; and there were no differences for Grundulus bogotensis and Eremophilus mutisii. Independently of climatic factors, O. mykiss and G. bogotensis were more abundant above the dam, and E. mutisii and T. bogotense under the dam. Conclusion: The five fish species differed in how the populations differed above and under the dam, suggesting that some are benefited by the dam, while others become smaller and less abundant.

Introducción: La fluorosis dental es una hipomineralización del esmalte producida como respuesta a la ingesta de fluor por un periodo prolongado durante la formación del esmaltado. Es una alteración irreversible, que clínicamente se caracteriza por la presencia de delgadas líneas blanquecinas distribuidas en el esmalte dental correspondientes a la disposición de las periquimatías, y en grados más avanzados de la enfermedad se odservan cambios en toda la superficie del esmaltado que adquiere un aspecto opaco, como de piedra caliza. En los niveles más severos de flurosis dental, la presencia de hipomineralización, y el aumento en la porosidad del esmalte dental propicia la pérdida de porciones importantes de su estructura, produciendo fracturas, por lo que se deteriora la apariencia y funcionalidad de los dientes afectados. (1) La OMS recomienda que el valor de referencia para el fluoruro en el agua potable es de 1,5 mg /1.(2) El flúor es un gas halógeno, el más electronegativo de los elementos de la tabla periódica, con número atómico 19, prácticamente no existe libre en la naturaleza, sino asociado a otros elementos como: calcio y sodio. La principal vía de incorporación del flúor en el organismo humano es la digestiva. Es absorbido rápidamente en la mucosa del intestino delgado y del estómago, por un simple fenómeno de difusión. Una en los tejidos, depositándose preferentemente en los tejidos duros; se elimina por todas las vías de excreción, principalmente por orina. La cantidad de flúor en el organismo es variable y depende de la ingestión, inhalación, absorción y eliminación, así como de las características de los compuestos. Generalmente se concentra en huesos, cartílagos, dientes y placa bacteriana. El depósito de flúor varía con la edad y la excreción. En los niños, el 50% se fija en huesos y dientes en formación; en adultos, se deposita básicamente en huesos. (3) Existen diversos métodos para su eliminación. En esta investigación se realizaron 18 procedimientos a pacientes de ambos sexos. La metodología fue dividir en dos grupos de 8 personas cada uno, en el cual se utilizó Antivet en el primer grupo y ácido clorhídrico al 18% en el segundo grupo. Los casos fueron seleccionados al azar y posteriormente se observaron los cambios clínicos con cada grupo. En el primer grupo de personas que utilizaron Antivet, se mostró que en casos severos de fluorosis no era un método tan eficaz, ya que no elimina por completo las manchas marrones, sin embargo, es un procedimiento muy bueno para uso clínico cuando los grados de fluorosis son menores. En el segundo grupo de personas que utilizaron ácido clorhídrico al 18% se demostró la eficacia del tratamiento en fluorosis de grados avanzados, donde el esmalte está más del 50% dañado, por lo que es un excelente método de tratamiento con el debido control en su manipulación. Objetivo: Saber diferenciar los tipos de materiales y conocer los diferentes métodos para eliminación de flúor así como mostrar la diferencia entre tratamientos. Metodología: El tipo de estudio es explicativo y con el cual se espera contribuir al desarrollo del conocimiento científico. Su realización supone el ánimo de contribuir al desarrollo del saber científico. Consistió en seleccionar 16 pacientes, masculinos y femenonos y de distintas edades de entre 15 y 40 años. Se dividieron al azar, en 2 grupos de 8 personas cada uno para tratarlos con 2 productos diferentes. El primer grupo fue tratado con ácido clorhídrico al 18% y el segundo grupo con la marca comercial Antivet. Resultado y conclusión: La fluorosis dental es causada por ingestas excesivas de flúor. El uso del ácido clorhídrico es corrosivo, su aroma es penetrante y los cuidados con el paciente son mayores, ya que un mal uso al tener contacto con piel o mucosa creará necrosis. El Antivet tiene desventajas de costo y disponibilidad, pero su ventaja es que brinda más seguridad en su manipulación.


Introduction: Dental fluorosis is a hypomineralization of the enamel produced due to fluoride intake for a prolonged time during enamel formation. It is an irreversible alteration, which is clinically characterized by the presence of thin whitish lines distributed in the dental enamel corresponding to the disposition of the perikymata. In more advanced degrees of the disease, changes are observed in the entire enamel surface, which acquires an opaque appearance, like limestone. In the most severe levels of dental fluorosis, the presence of hypomineralization and increased porosity of the dental enamel leads to the loss of essential portions of its structure, producing fractures, thus deteriorating the appearance and functionality of the affected teeth. (1) The WHO recommends that the reference value for fluoride in drinking water is 1.5 mg/l. (2) Fluoride is a halogen gas, the most electronegative of the periodic table elements, with atomic number 19. It practically does not exist free in nature but is associated with other elements such as calcium and sodium. The primary way of incorporating fluorine into the human organism is through the digestive system. It is rapidly absorbed in the mucosa of the small intestine and stomach by a simple phenomenon of diffusion. Once absorbed, fluoride passes into the blood and is distributed in the tissues, preferentially deposited in hard tissues; it is eliminated by all excretion routes, mainly by the urine. The amount of fluoride in the body is variable and depends on ingestion, inhalation, absorption, elimination, and the characteristics of the compounds. It is generally concentrated in bones, cartilage, teeth, and bacterial plaque. Fluoride deposition varies with age and excretion. In children, 50% is fixed in bones and teeth information; it is basically deposited in bones in adults. (3) There are various methods for its elimination. In this research, 18 procedures were performed on patients of both sexes. The methodology was divided into two groups of 8 persons each, in which Antivet was used in the first group and 18% hydrochloric acid in the second group. The cases were randomly selected, and subsequently, the clinical changes were observed in each group. In the first group of people who used Antivet, it was shown that in severe cases of fluorosis, it was not such an effective method since it does not completely eliminate the brown stains. However, it is a very effective method for clinical use when the degrees of fluorosis are lower. In the second group of people who used 18% hydrochloric acid, the effectiveness of the treatment was demonstrated in advanced degrees of fluorosis, where the enamel is more than 50% damaged, making it an excellent method of treatment with due control in its manipulation. Objective: To differentiate the types of materials and to know the different methods for fluoride elimination as well as to show the difference between treatments. Methodology: The type of study is explanatory, and it is expected to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge. It was carried out to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge. It consisted of selecting 16 patients of both sexes and of different ages between 15 and 40 years old. They were randomly divided into two groups of 8 persons, each to be treated with two different products. The first group was treated with 18% hydrochloric acid, and the second group with the comercial brand Antivet. Result and conclusion: Dental fluorosis is caused by excessive fluoride intake. Hydrochloric acid is corrosive, its aroma is penetrating, and the care with the patient is greater since a wrong use when in contact with skin or mucosa will create necrosis. Antivet has disadvantages of cost and availability, but its advantage is that it provides more safety in its handling.

Resumen Introducción: La distribución espacial y temporal de la infección por SARS-CoV-2 sobrepasa las áreas endémicas de enfermedades transmitidas por vector (ETV), cuya vigilancia en México ha cambiado sustancialmente a partir del primer caso confirmado de COVID-19. Objetivos: Estimar y comparar las tasas de incidencia de las ETV antes y después de la introducción del SARS-CoV-2 en México. Métodos: Estudio retrospectivo de casos de ETV de 2014 a 2021. Las tasas de incidencia de cada ETV en el periodo previo (2014-2019) y posterior (2020-2021) a la introducción del SARS-CoV-2 en México fueron calculadas y comparadas. Resultados: Antes de la introducción del SARS-CoV-2, las tasas de incidencia de las ETV fueron altas y posterior a la introducción del coronavirus hubo un descenso en los índices epidemiológicos; sin embargo, solo se identificó diferencia estadística significativa en la tasa de incidencia de la malaria (p ≤ 0.05) y otras rickettsias (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusiones: Algunas medidas para reducir los casos de COVID-19, como el distanciamiento social, el confinamiento domiciliario, la reducción en el aforo en el transporte público y el trabajo en casa, probablemente contribuyeron a disminuir temporalmente el número de casos de las ETV; sin embargo, puede haber rebrote de las ETV en el futuro cercano.


Abstract Introduction: SARS-CoV-2 infection spatial and temporal distribution overlaps with endemic areas of vector-borne diseases (VBD), whose surveillance in Mexico has substantially changed since the first COVID-19 confirmed case. Objectives: To estimate and compare the incidence rates of VBDs before and after the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in Mexico. Methods: Retrospective study of VBD cases from 2014 to 2021. The incidence rates of each VBD in the period before (2014-2019) and after (2020-2021) the introduction of SARS-CoV-2 in Mexico were calculated and compared. Results: Before the introduction of SARS-CoV-2, the incidence rates of VBDs were high and after the introduction of coronavirus there was a decrease in epidemiological indices; however, there was only statistically significant difference in the incidence rate of malaria (p ≤ 0.05) and other rickettsiae (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusions: Some measures to reduce COVID-19 cases, such as social distancing, home confinement, reductions in public transport and working at home (home office), probably temporarily decreased the number of VBD cases; however, there may be a resurgence of VBDs in the near future.
